First Chords to Learn

Guitar chords are the foundation for almost all the songs you will play. The most common for beginners’ chords are open chords, which include E major, A major, D major, G major, and C major. These chords use a combination of open strings. Learning these shapes and the transitions between them is one of the most important steps in becoming a competent guitar player. Start by placing your fingers one at a time on the correct frets, applying even pressure to get a clean sound. Strum each string and listen carefully to make sure each note rings clearly. Using diagrams and videos helps visualize your finger placement. After practicing individual chords, and practice with changing between different chords slowly you will be well on your way, remember “Take your time”. Although, until you become familiar with playing these chords, you might first find yourself becoming frustrated at first, but speed and accuracy come with practice and repetition. Also listen to each chord’s sound and memorize how it feels and sounds. Many songs use just three or four of these basic chords. After you're familiar with them, you'll be able to play hundreds of songs with confidence.
